The Bible, Christianity, and Homosexuality

If you, like me, weary of Bible-based rants against you but lack the scholarly background to lay waste to these faith-baseless attacks, you'll love this neat pamphlet, the author of which sent me a note yesterday. When he did I actually thought he was one of those ranters jabbing at us. I checked out the booklet, though, and found that it is well written and researched and ends up on our side. If you need or want solid biblical interpretations of old chestnuts like not "lying with man as with woman," this piece is packed with ammo. Here's what the author said in response to my question about why he described his booklet in such neutral language in his original note: "I wanted my site to not appear to be the most flaming site, but really to be focused on what the Bible says. I wanted people who are sincerely searching to find out what the Bible says to not be led away from my site for any reason so I wanted it kinda neutral in style, and not totally overt about where my study ends up. I thought the rainbow triangle on the cover would be a clue though. I hope all that makes sense. My pamphlet goes on to show that the Bible says nothing about homosexual acts outside of prostitution, pederasty, and rape. It therefore cannot be used to condemn all homosexual relations. I also show how gay marriage can fulfill a traditional understanding of marriage." Here's a link to the full booklet: http://www.gayrites.net/sites/default/files/bible.pdf. The Bible, Christianity, and Homosexuality By Justin R. Cannon Copyright © 2005 All Rights Reserved www.truthsetsfree.net Here's Justin's intro to his piece: What does the Bible really say about homosexuality? Should the Church allow the blessing of homosexual marriages/unions? Should a homosexual in a committed relationship be ordained a priest or even consecrated bishop? What about tradition? What should I tell my friends or relatives who are gay? Must they remain single for their whole life? We all have pondered at least one of these questions at some time or another. This study is the end product of much research, dialogue, and prayerful reflection. I sat down one day and decided: I want to know once and for all what the Bible really says about homosexuality. I would like to share with you a study of the six Bible verses that have often been used in reference to homosexuality, as well as explore homosexuality within the context of Christian tradition. Regardless of whether or not you are Bible scholar; whether or not you can read Greek; or if you know everything or nothing about Christian tradition, you will be able to follow this study of: The Bible, Christianity, and Homosexuality.
