We’ve come a long way, Baby. Thirty-five years ago, the struggle for gay rights exploded into action with a single event. It was a hot summer night on June 28, 1969 when police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay nightspot in New York’s Greenwich Village. Police raids on gay bars and nightclubs were nothing new.

Family: It's the most basic unit of our society—and it's quickly becoming one of the most controversial aspects of the political, religious and social realms. What makes a family? How do we define it? Is one family more valid than another? Does one hold more value than another? What is a family?
As some of my readers may know, I come from a big family.

On September 25, 2004, Mark Starliper died from injuries sustained in a brutal assault. Mark was forty-three years old, a proud gay man, a talented designer, and a truly generous soul. Mark was also our friend.

One Last Plea

As I was pondering the topic for this week's column, it occurred to me that this will be my last Heart to Heart before the November 2 elections. I had wanted to avoid a political subject, but since by the time I sit down to write the next column the next president will have been chosen, I couldn't resist one last plea to those of you who may still be undecided.

Tuesday night, after an extremely tense day and an even more anxious evening of watching neck-and-neck election results, I went to bed still not knowing who the next president would be, but fearing the worst. It was looking like a replay of the 2000 election. All night long, I tossed and turned, having nightmares about headlines declaring Bush the winner.

Once a year, I allow myself one column filled to overflowing with sap. I unapologetically churn out a sickening sweet article listing the things for which I am thankful. My good friend Dana affectionately calls these "fluffy articles"—and they are her favorite.

Like a Plague
Homophobia seems to be sweeping the nation like a plague of Biblical proportions—an apt analogy since the basis for most of the antigay sentiments is the Bible. The outbreak has been building for years now. I think it all started when Bush took office in 2000 and it's gotten steadily worse ever since. The latest wave of "moral values" that ensured four more years of fundamentalist conservatism brought the threat level to epidemic proportions. Don't believe me? Just check out the latest news.
